Tarxien Rainbows defeated Sliema Wanderers 2-1 in a match from the YoHealth Malta Premier Closing Round Bottom 6 at the Centenary Stadium on Friday to maintain alive hopes of avoiding relegation.
Had they failed to beat Sliema, they would have ended their commitments in the second place from bottom and after placing bottom in the Opening Round, they would have been relegated automatically. However, by ending on level points with Zabbar St. Patrick, a decider is necessary to determine which team will avoid the second place from bottom. The decider is set to be played on Tuesday.
In case of a win for Tarxien, Zabbar would end second from bottom and the two teams would have to face each other in a relegation play-off. On the other hand, in case of a win for Zabbar, Tarxien would be relegated automatically.
An own goal by Neil Frendo put Tarxien ahead on 8 minutes but Sliema Wanderers converted a penalty by Edmond Agius, who will be hanging his boots after this game, on 28 minutes.
However, another penalty, this time converted by Manyluak Aguek for Tarxien Rainbows on 74 minutes handed them the three points.
Sliema had Fernandinho sent off three minutes in added time.
