Floriana, Marsaxlokk face off in YoHealth Malta Premier Finalissima

The YoHealth Malta Premier title will be at stake on Saturday as Floriana and Marsaxlokk cross swords at the National Stadium in the Finalissima, kick-off at 16:00.

After reaching the Final Four, the two teams reached the final after emerging as winners in the two semi-finals. Floriana managed to beat Valletta on penalties following a goalless draw at the end of the ninety minutes and extra-time. On the other hand, Marsaxlokk beat last season’s champions Hamrun Spartans 2-1 after extra-time.

Led by coach Daniel Portela, the Greens were the most consistent side throughout the competition. They finished the Opening Round league phase on top with 23 points but after obtaining three wins, a draw and losing one game in the Top 6, they finished second behind Hamrun Spartans. On the other hand, they remained unbeaten in the Closing Round league phase to finish three points ahead of Hamrun Spartans and after winning four games in the Top 6, losing one, they ended on top, six points ahead of second-placed Marsaxlokk.

The Southseasiders placed fifth in the Opening Round league phase, maintaining the same place in the Top 6, finishing nine points behind Hamrun Spartans.  On the other hand, in the Closing Round, Marsaxlokk, led by Vincenzo Potenza, placed third in the league phase, six points behind Floriana and three behind Hamrun but in the Top 6, thanks to three wins in five matches, they overtook Hamrun to finish second, six behind Floriana and three ahead of the Spartans.

For the Greens, this would be a record 27th title in the history of the club. They would lift the trophy once again six years after being awarded the title by the Council of the Malta Football Association in season 2019/20 as the league was prematurely terminated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Marsaxlokk, on the other hand, are chasing their second championship in the history of the club after winning their only title in season 2006/07.

The new champions will enter the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round while the losing finalists will enter the UEFA Conference League first qualifying round along with third-placed Hamrun Spartans who defeated Valletta 2-0 on Friday in the final for third place.

In the Finalissima, extra-time will be played if necessary and if the result is still draw, penalty kicks will be taken in accordance with the Laws of the Game.
