In a statement, the MFPA welcomed the recent approval by the Malta Premier of the 2026/27 Premier League calendar and, in particular, the consultation process undertaken with player representatives during its preparation.
Following discussions with our members, the MFPA provided feedback to the League and is pleased to note a number of positive developments, including:
- Fewer midweek fixtures
- A longer recovery period over Christmas and New Year
- Greater visibility of the fixture schedule throughout the season
The MFPA said these were among the key concerns consistently raised by players in recent seasons and their inclusion represents a positive step forward for player welfare, recovery, planning and performance.
“The MFPA also encourages the continued consideration of internationally recognised player welfare principles, including adequate off-season rest, sufficient recovery time between matches, effective player workload management and appropriate measures to protect players during periods of extreme heat.”
“We thank the League for engaging with player representatives and remain committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure that Maltese football continues to develop in a way that balances sporting, commercial and player welfare considerations.”
