Maltese clubs receive VisitMalta grants for participation in UEFA competitions

VisitMalta, in agreement with the Maltese Football Association (MFA), relaunched its financial support programme for participants in UEFA club competitions. Each team qualifying under the programme’s conditions received €15,000 towards participation in official UEFA competitions.

Seven teams included on the recipients list

The payments are distributed across several tournament categories, covering men’s football, women’s football, futsal, and youth competitions. In total, seven teams representing Malta on the European stage will receive support.

Men’s football in UEFA club competitions

Four clubs feature in this category. Floriana FC will participate in the UEFA Champions League, while Ħamrun Spartans FC, Marsaxlokk FC, and Valletta FC will compete in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

UEFA Women’s Champions League

Mġarr FC receives support in connection with its participation in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, on the same financial terms as the men’s clubs.

Luxol St Andrews’ European campaign in futsal

Luxol St Andrews is included in the programme by virtue of its participation in the UEFA Futsal Champions League. The incentive amount is also €15,000.

Valletta FC’s youth team receives additional support

Valletta FC appears in the programme twice. In addition to the payment for the senior team’s participation in the UEFA Europa Conference League, the club’s youth team receives a separate grant in connection with its participation in the UEFA Youth League.

How the agreement works

The payments function as incentives and are allocated to each team included in the programme. At the same time, the VisitMalta brand is featured on the playing kit that clubs wear during UEFA matches. This combination of financial support and promotional integration has become part of the broader arrangements between VisitMalta and the MFA.

In essence, the model operates as a sponsorship exchange. Clubs receive funds to cover costs associated with their European campaigns, while the island’s tourism authority secures international visibility in stadiums and broadcasts.

“Our country’s small size should not be an obstacle”

Minister for Tourism Joe Etienne Abela emphasised that the government intends to consistently support athletes and clubs representing Malta abroad. In his view, sport has long outgrown the boundaries of competition and has become a tool for promoting national identity, strengthening reputation, and attracting new opportunities.

“Our country’s small size should never be an obstacle to the ambitions of Maltese sport. On the contrary, it should serve as motivation to act more boldly and to encourage sporting organisations to reach beyond our shores,” Abela stated.

Sport as a strategic channel for promoting Malta

Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) CEO Carlo Micallef noted that collaboration with football clubs strengthens Malta’s positioning in international markets through sport. In his assessment, Maltese clubs participating in UEFA club competitions effectively serve as ambassadors for the country, while the VisitMalta brand gains access to audiences that traditional tourism campaigns struggle to reach. Micallef also highlighted the economic potential of sports tourism as a distinct destination segment capable of generating additional visitor flows and reinforcing Malta’s image as a modern and dynamic destination.

Nevertheless, the popularity of Maltese football is growing well beyond the country’s borders and even beyond Europe. To verify this, several industry sources were examined, from Rwanda to Pakistan. According to the portal Bookabetrw, which reviews betting platforms in Rwanda, interest in European tournaments featuring smaller clubs has grown noticeably in the African region over recent years, and Maltese teams have not been left out.

Similar data was provided by online sports betting sites from Pakistan. The considerable distance between these countries and their entirely different cultures might suggest diverging sporting preferences, yet even there, the achievements of football clubs from Malta are followed closely.

Online sports betting sites are increasingly featuring matches from the qualifying rounds of UEFA club competitions involving Maltese clubs, which indirectly confirms the expansion of audiences beyond traditional football markets. For a small island state, such attention from a global audience provides an additional argument in favour of investing in the international performances of its clubs.

A partnership that delivers practical results

MFA President Bjorn Vassallo described the initiative as an example of effective cooperation between the association, the Ministry for Tourism, and the MTA. In his view, such coordination yields tangible results for the development of Maltese football and futsal. Vassallo expressed his gratitude to the partners for their systematic support.

The programme enables Maltese teams to prepare more effectively for competition at the European level while simultaneously providing VisitMalta brand activations at UEFA-sanctioned matches.
