Early goals hand Hamrun Spartans a spot in UEFA Conference League

Hamrun Spartans secured a spot in the UEFA Conference League first qualifying round as they defeated Valletta 2-0 in the final for third place of the YoHealth Malta Premier at the National Stadium on Friday.

The Spartans, who lost 2-3 to Marsaxlokk after extra-time in the semi-finals, scored twice within the first seven minutes to take a comfortable lead with the Citizens failing to react.

At this point, Valletta’s chances of qualifying for European football rely on the Meridianbet FA Trophy Final where the Citizens would be facing Gzira United on May 23.

Valletta started with goalkeeper Julani Archibald in goal while Celio deputised for Henry Bonello for Hamrun. Ryan Camenzuli was ruled out injured.

It took Hamrun Spartans just eighteen seconds to take the lead when off a coss by Matthew Guillaumier from the right, Joseph Mbong headed the ball over goalkeeper Juliani Archibald.

The Spartans doubled the score on 7 minutes when off a Joseph Mbong cross from the left, Kleri Serber headed the ball in the direction of Damir Ceter who headed the ball home from close range.

In the final stages, Hamrun could have increased the lead but Archibald performed good saves on Ceter and Mbong.
