Floriana bow out of UEFA Champions League after 5-1 defeat to Shamrock Rovers

Floriana were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League after losing 5-1 to Shamrock Rovers of Ireland in the second leg of the first qualifying round at the Tallaght Stadium in Dublin on Tuesday. 

The Hoops therefore reach the second qualifying round with a 5-3 aggregate score and will now face Ararat-Armenia who lost 3-2 to Riga FC in the second leg but qualified with a 4-3 aggregate score following a 2-0 win on home soil.  

Floriana, on the other hand, now enter the second qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League champions path where they would be facing FC Drita of Kosovo who were eliminated with a 3-4 aggregate score by FK Kauno Žalgiris.

The hosts managed to take the lead after just seven minutes when off a Jack Bryne corner, Lee Grace headed home past goalkeeper Guilherme Cioletti.

The Greens equalised on 13 minutes when off an assist by Mustapha Jah from the left, Tomislav Gudlj hit home past goalkeeper Ed McGinty. 

However, Shamrock Rovers regained the lead on 29 minutes when Dylan Watts beat the Floriana goalkeeper with a header which hit the bar before ending at the back of the net following a through ball by Adam Brennan.

Three minutes in the second half, John McGovern placed the ball at the back of the empty net following a cross by Watts and on 61 minutes, Shamrock Rovers went 4-1 ahead thanks to Graham Burke who advanced upfield before slotting the ball past Cioletti. 

The Hoops sealed the issue with another goal on 73 minutes thanks to Jack Bryne who lobbed the ball over Cioletti when served by Watts.
