Zurrieq FC Coaches Explore New Approaches to Youth Development During Erasmus+ Visit

A group of Zurrieq Football Club coaches has returned from an international coaching development visit aimed at gaining new perspectives on youth football, player development and the pathway from academy football to the senior game.

The four-day programme, held between 2 and 5 October, took the Maltese delegation to a number of football clubs and sporting facilities in Slovenia and neighbouring Croatia. The initiative was carried out under the Erasmus+ Sport programme and was supported through European Union funding under the KA182-SPO mobility framework.

The project, entitled “Learning through Football – Connecting youth football talents from Malta and Slovenia”, brought together 14 Zurrieq FC coaches and members of the project team. The programme combined academy visits, match observations, presentations and group discussions, giving the coaches an opportunity to examine different approaches to developing young players.

One of the main visits was to NK Nafta Lendava, where the delegation was introduced to the club’s academy structure and coaching environment. The visit included discussions and observations relating to youth-team organisation, coaching methodology, individual player development, communication between coaches and players, talent identification and the transition from youth football towards senior football.

At NŠ Mura in Murska Sobota, the delegation examined in greater depth how a structured pathway can be created from the youngest academy categories through to the first team. Particular attention was given to individual player development, with player cards incorporating testing results, feedback and development objectives being reviewed regularly. The club also outlined its approach to providing additional technical and position-specific training.

The final major club visit took place at NK Varaždin in Croatia. Coaches were presented with a long-term development model covering approximately 10 to 12 years, from the early academy age groups through to first-team football. The club also demonstrated how expectations are adapted according to the age and development stage of players, including the importance of enjoyment and freedom at younger ages before progressively introducing greater discipline, responsibility and competitive demands.

The programme also included five match observations, expert presentations and practical group work. One of the sessions challenged coaches to communicate a half-time tactical game plan clearly and effectively, highlighting the importance of decision-making and communication under pressure.

The project was conceived and implemented on behalf of Zurrieq FC by Melvyn Mangion, and Head Coach Frans Cassar and the club to deliver the international learning programme.

The experience is expected to contribute to Zurrieq FC’s ongoing coaching development, with the delegation identifying several areas for further work, including clearer pathways towards senior football, structured individual development plans, age-appropriate expectations, talent retention and improved communication.

The initiative demonstrates how Erasmus+ Sport and EU funding can provide local football organisations with opportunities to learn from international partners and bring new ideas and practices back into the Maltese football environment.
