U*BET FA Trophy: Melita eliminated, Xewkija through to third round

Melita were the first casualty from the First Division as they were beaten on penalties by Second Division side Mellieha in a match from the second round of the U*BET FA Trophy.

At the end of the ninety minutes, the score was still 0-0 and with no goals being scored in extra-time, penalties had to decide the issue. In the penalty shoot-out, Mellieha scored four and Melita two.

Second Division side Gzira United also reached the third round after defeating Gozitan side SK Victoria Wanderers on penalties at the Luxol Stadium.

Following a goalless draw at the end of the ninety minutes and extra-time, the Maroons scored four and the Wanderers three.

At the Gozo Stadium, Xewkija Tigers were the first Gozitan side to reach the third round as they beat Third Division side Mdina Knights 2-1. Rodney Buttigieg put the Tigers ahead and although Justin Buhagiar levelled matters, Mark Camilleri notched the winner for Xewkija.

Sannat Lions, on the other hand, were eliminated by Second Division side Gharghur who won 2-1.

In another match at the Centenary Stadium, Lija Athletic defeated St. Andrews on penalties in a clash between two First Division sides.

Arama Nakua and Nicky Vella Petroni on 19 and 20 minutes gave the Saints a two-goal lead but Ige Abdullahi Adeshina and Keith Darmanin scored for Lija on 25 and 35 minutes to level matters. The game went into extra-time and with no goals being scored, penalties had to decide which team would make it to the third round. Lija Athletic won 5-4.

In a clash between two Second Division sides, San Gwann beat Sta. Venera Lightnings 2-1 at the Luxol Stadium.

Christian Cacciattolo gave San Gwann the lead on 11 minutes. Jeffrey Zammit levelled matters two minutes in added time but a minute later, Keith Vella made it 2-1 for San Gwann.
