The 18th Edition of the Mediterranean Cup organized by the San Gwann Youth Football Nursery gets underway on the 31st of March.
This manifestation of local youth football is organized annually by the San Gwann Youth Football Nursery, with the collaboration and support of the San Gwann Local Council, the Ministry of Family, Work and Education, the General Soft Drinks and the Mediterranean Bank.
In the last moments, Sporting Nissa, a youth team from Caltanisetta have confirmed their participation in the under 10 category, ensuring the international flavour of the prestigious football activity is maintained for another year.
The format will be different this year, as the club will adopt to the new regulations introduced by the Grassroots Committee set up within the Malta Football Association. The categories taking part will be split in 5, starting from children Under 7 going up to others aged under 11 (children born between 2001 and 2006). This meant that no fewer than 600 boys and girls and officials from 15 nurseries, forming no fewer than 38 teams will play around 130 games between them over the 10-day event.
The other local clubs taking part in the 2012 Edition are San Gwann, Hamrun Spartans, Luxol St. Andrews, Melita, Santa Lucija, Pieta Hotspurs, Mosta, Sliema Wanderers, Floriana, Tarxien Rainbows, Lija Iklin, Paola Hibs, Qormi, Birkirkara and Gzira United.
The San Gwann Nursery, during a meeting with participating clubs who attended the draws of the initial games urged the clubs to ensure the games be played in the appropriate sporting manner, and the theme RESPECT be adopted by one and all, including parents and supporters, officials and players.
