Six teams through to Women's Knock-Out quarter-finals

20110417-114224.jpgFirst Division sides Tarxien Rainbows, Gozo, Pembroke Athleta and Hibernians and Second Division sides Kirkop United and St. Venera Yellow Blues joined Mosta and Birkirkara in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Knock-Out 2012/13.

In Friday’s quarter-finals, Tarxien Rainbows take on St. Venera Yellow Blues, Mosta face Hibernians, Gozo meet Kirkop United while Birkirkara take on Pembroke Athleta.

At the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Tarxien Rainbows found no difficulty in beating Second Division side Vittoriosa Stars 7-1.

The Rainbows took the lead on the 19th minute thanks to Kim Magro and Francesca Cauchi scored twice on the 28th and 31st to increase the lead to 3-0. Roxanne Attard scored the fourth goal two minutes from half-time and Janice Zahra, just before the break, made it 5-0. Twenty-two minutes in the second half, Lisa Senecal scored the sixth goal for Tarxien and Kristine Camilleri added another on the 72nd. Four minutes later, Kylie Monaco scored a consolation goal for Vittoriosa.

Gozo registered a comfortable 8-0 win over Hamrun Spartans at the Sirens Stadium.

The Gozitans proved too strong for the Spartans who have been relegated to Division 2. They built a four-goal lead by the end of the first half, adding another four after the break. Emma Xuereb notched a hat-trick, player-coach Melania Bajada scored two while Tracy Teuma, Ann-Marie Said and Samantha Vella scored the other three goals.

Pembroke Athleta defeated Second Division champions Raiders (Luxol) 5-1 at the Mgarr Ground. This was the first defeat for Raiders after winning the championship unbeaten.

Pembroke took the lead on the 8th minute thanks to Sarah Caruana and a brace by Thresa Scicluna on the 18th and 35th minute put them three goals ahead. Rodienne Zerafa pulled one back one minute from half-time but four minutes in the second half, Martina Borg restored a three-goal lead. Amber Grech sealed the issue five minutes from time.

Hibernians beat Mgarr United 3-2 in an entertaining clash at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.

Although Hibernians held the initiative, they only managed to take the lead one minute from half-time thanks to Claire Sciberras. Six minutes in the second half, Claudette Xuereb levelled matters but Ylenia Carabott restored the lead on the hour. Charlene Zammit made it 3-1 on the 85th minute. Four minutes from time, Antoinette Sammut converted a penalty to reduce the gap.

Kirkop United needed extra-time to defeat Fgura United 3-2 in a dramatic way in a clash between two Second Division sides at the Mgarr Ground.

Donnalise Xerri put Kirkop ahead on 51 minutes to put Kirkop ahead but seven minutes from time, Jackie Abdilla levelled matters to force extra-time. Stacie Caruana of Kirkop and Karen Schembri of Fgura were then sent off.

Alysa Cachia made it 2-1 for Fgura on the 97th but Tara Attard restored equilibrium two minutes before the end of the first half of extra-time. The game seemed heading for the penalty shoot-out until one minute from time, Tara Attard hit the woodwork and off the rebound, Alessia Caschetto placed the ball at the back of the net.

Despite going on the field of play with just nine and then eventually ten players, Sta. Venera Yellow Blues still managed to beat Lija/Iklin 2-1 after extra-time at the Sirens Stadium.

After a goalless first half, Nadia Micallef managed to break the deadlock for Lija/Iklin on the 71st minute but four minutes later, Orianne Cassar levelled matters. With the game going into extra-time, the Saints notched the winner two minutes from the end of the first half thanks to a long distance shot by Emily Pace.
