Futsal: Luxol, Balzan maintain momentum

Balzan and Luxol maintained their good form of late in the Futsal Premier Division after seeing off newly-promoted sides Zebbug Rangers and Gzira United at the Corradino Sports Pavilion to keep their perfect record.

Luxol registered an emphatic 10-2 win against Gzira United. Florin Anton’s boys dominated for long stretches of the match and managed to hit the target eight times before half time. In the second half, the match did not change so much as Luxol continued to impose their game with Gzira at least scoring two consolation goals. Brazilian nippy striker Celino Alves scored a poker, William Barbosa and George Frendo hit a brace while Dale Camilleri and Florin Anton completed the mission for Luxol. Luke Stivala and Alessio Restuccia reduced the arrears for Gzira United.

Balzan defeated Zebbug Rangers 8-0 to keep up with their nearest rivals. Croatian International Frane Despotovic hit a hat-trick for the Champions. Carl Azzopardi, Glenn Bonello, Matthew Attard, Boycho Marev and Nicola Del Re added more goals for Balzan.

Hamrun Spartans clinched their fourth success of the season after seeing off Qormi 4-2 in a relatively balanced encounter.
Rogerio dos Santos Filho scored a brace for Hamrun while Noel Bray and Mohammed Elamari added more goals. Qormi netted two goals from Jesmond Micallef and Marwan Telisi.

Valletta grabbed their second victory as they defeated Mosta FC 4-1 to climb fifth in the standings. Denis di Maio once again hit the headlines for the Citizens as he scored a hat-trick with Cedric Sciberras adding another one. Steve Ferriggi scored the consolation goal for Mosta.

In the First Division top-of-the-table clash, Mellieha dramatically beat Lija 8-6 to climb top of the table. Lija took the lead early in the match but after the northerners levelled the matters they managed to turn the tables before half-time. Mellieha extended the lead to 6-2 but Lija produced a remarkable comeback to level the matters 6-6 one minute from the end. As both teams were settled for a draw, Mellieha were awarded a free shot 42 seconds from the end that was eventually converted and managed to increase the lead seconds afterwards.

Nikolay Filipov was Mellieha’s star player as he netted six goals with Robert Magro and Darren Aitchinson adding more goals for their team. A hat-trick by Aleksandar Ribic, a brace by Antonio Marin and a goal from Mark Mizzi were the goal-getters for Lija.

In other matches, Mdina Knights clinched their first win of the season after seeing off Msida St. Joseph 7-5.

Naxxar Lions defeated Birzebbuga St. Peter’s 8-2 while Siggiewi got the points after seeing off Qrendi 11-3. Sirens and Mqabba shared the spoils in a 1-1 balanced encounter.
