BOV Division 1: St. George’s extend positive run to deny St. Andrews top spot

St. George’s extended their positive run to six matches without defeat as they beat St. Andrews 1-0 and stop them from regaining the top spot in the BOV First Division. St. Andrews therefore stay second on level points with Gudja United and Vittoriosa Stars, one point behind leaders Pembroke Athleta and two ahead of St. George’s who are now fifth.

Top-scorer Gabriel Okechukwu scored the all-important goal eight minutes in the second half.

Ten-man Melita could only earn a point in a goalless draw with Fgura United, joining St. George’s in fifth place.

Rabat Ajax and Gzira United both registered a third consecutive win.

Rabat defeated Lija Athletic 2-0 thanks to a penalty by David Azzopardi on the 77th minute and a goal by Lawrence Chiedozie six minutes later. On the other hand, Gzira United defeated Birzebbuga St. Peter’s 2-1 as Steve Meilak put the Maroons ahead on 41 minutes and Moises Avila Perez doubling the score nine minues in the second half with Nicolo Clerico reducing the gap five minutes from time.

Pembroke lead the way with 23 points, followed by Gudja, Vittoriosa and St. Andrews on 22, St. George’s and Melita 20, Gzira 19, Lija 18, Rabat 17, Fgura 16, Mqabba 14, Zurrieq and Msida 10 and Birzebbuga 3.
