Melita kept promotion hopes alive as a penalty by George Gribbon gave them a narrow win over relegation strugglers Zurrieq in one of the two matches from the BOV First Division on Saturday. The Amateurs move one point behind third placed Fgura United who however have a game in hand.
In another match, Mqabba moved a step closer to securing their First Division status as they defeated Msida St. Joseph 2-1. An own goal put Msida ahead three minutes from the end of the first half but Mqabba were quick to equalise through Guy Stephane Tape. One minute from time, Guilherme Soares de Freitas notched the winner for Leslie Burke’s side.
St. Andrews lead the way with 42 points, followed by Pembroke on 40, Fgura 39, Melita 38, Gzira 36, Vittoriosa 35, Gudja 34, St. George’s 31, Mqabba 29, Lija 28, Rabat 22, Zurrieq 18, Msida 14 and Birzebbuga 12.
