Dr Angelo Chetcuti appointed MFA General Secretary

MFADr Angelo Chetcuti has been appointed as the new MFA General Secretary following the resignation of Bjorn Vassallo who will be taking the role of Director – Member Associations in Europe at FIFA.

Dr Chetcuti, Council Member for Birzebbuga St. Peter’s, will take over on December 1 as Vassallo will quit at the end of November.

Bjorn Vassallo said that ten years ago, he was one of those who thought that there was a need to change the status quo and wanted to be of service for the game. Vassallo said that the past ten years were full on challenges with several ups and downs. He said that over the past years, a lot of work has been done and his departure presents an opportunity for his successor.

MFA President Norman Darmanin Demajo said that it was of great honour for the association to have two of its officials offered a job at FIFA and UEFA.

Darmanin Demajo said that Bjorn Vassallo was the one who had suggested that he should run for president. He said that Vassallo’s departure was the end of a chapter and was now recommending for the job, a person who had the necessary qualities who could take the role and do the job with honour and integrity.

In a short speech, Dr Chetcuti thanked the MFA President for showing faith in him and said that this appointment gave him courage. He promise hundred percent commitment for the job.

Meanwhile nominations for the post of vice-president to replace Dr Chris Bonett who will be joining UEFA as Integrity Officer, may be submitted until November 18.

The new vice-president will be elected during an Extraordinary General Meeting on Tuesday 6th December.

Dr Bonett thanked those who messaged them to congratulate him for this new job. He said that Norman Darmanin Demajo had asked him to set-up a legal department six years ago. When there was a need for change, with the help of everyone, the changes in regulations were carried out.
