Futsal: Swieqi United take top spot

Swieqi United moved top in the Gatorade Futsal League standings following two convincing wins over Qormi Futsal and Safi San Lorenzo respectively.

Swieqi swept aside Safi’s challenge with a 7-1 score. They went 5-1 ahead before half-time and adding another two goals after the break. Bulgarian duo Dimitar Petev and Boicho Marev scored two goals each while Andre Ciancio, Christian Wismayer and Redeemer Borg contributed the other goals for the winners. Clive Calleja scored a consolation goal for Safi San Lorenzo.

In another match, Swieqi defeated Qormi Futsal 8-2. Swieqi had Boicho Marev in fine form as he netted a poker and was involved in many of his team’s opportunities. Kurt Bartolo, Christian Wismayer, Fredrik Johansson and Redeemer Borg were the other players on the mark. Qormi managed to reduce the arrears through Antoine Galea and Miguel Alcaraz.

Title contenders Luxol also had a comprehensive 7-2 win over Msida St Joseph. The St Andrews outfit had Glenn Bonello and Carl Azzopardi who hit the target twice, while Frane Despotovic, Andy Mangion and Celino Alves completed the score. Msida scored twice thanks to Florin Manea.

In another match, Msida St. Joseph beat Tarxien JMI 7-5. The Seasiders dominated the first half to go 4-1 ahead but Tarxien’s second-half reaction injected fresh interest into the game as they narrowed the gap and also missed several scoring opportunities. Msida, however, scored three quick goals in the latter stages to make sure of the points. George Frendo and Liam Cachia netted three goals each while Armando Gjepali increased the tally for Msida. Tarxien replied through a brace from Vince Camilleri and goals from Silvio Saliba, Preston Ellul and Mark Micallef.

Pokers by Alan Spiteri and Craig Pickard and a Bertram Azzopardi brace gave Qrendi a significant 10-4 win against Swieqi Under-21. The latter reduced the score through Nikolai Dimech, Karl Sciortino, Dylan Pace and Dale Vella.

Meanwhile the match between University of Malta and Zurrieq Wolves was abandoned due to rainwater ingress at the Corradino Pavillion which rendered the surface dangerous for players.
