Birkirkara girls hope to extend winning streak

BOV Women’s First Division leaders Birkirkara will be targeting maximum points when they take on bottom-placed Gozo, as they are three wins away from securing their sixth title of their history.

After beating rivals Hibernians 2-1 last week, the Stripes have moved 10 points clear above the Paolites, putting themselves in the driving seat as they edge closer to the dethrone Hibernians and claim the status of champions after an absence of three years. Shawn Meilak’s team will take on Gozo and despite the Gozitans are sitting in last place, the Stripes are wary of their threat. Meanwhile, Gozo will be trying to avoid returning home empty-handed, in bid to challenge Raiders (Luxol) for the play-off spot – (18.00, Mgarr Ground).

Defending champions Hibernians will be in action in the following kick-off, as they face the other relegation battlers Raiders (Luxol). Having lost to their eternal rivals, defending successfully last year’s championships seems an uphill task for the Paolites. Nonetheless, returning to winning ways would serve as a boost ahead of their Knock-Out commitments which will resume next week, when they meet Raiders again. On the other hand, Raiders are currently penultimate, one point above Gozo as they aim to salvage their status as a Division One side – (20.15, Mgarr Ground).

The other match will see Mgarr United taking on the revelation of the season, Kirkop United, in a match which can have a decisive outcome on who will be claiming the third spot. The Green are currently holding to that position with 23 points, while the Reds are two points behind them. A win for Mgarr would all but seal third place for them but if the three points go the other side, then we may have to settle for a splendid rush finale between these two exciting sides – (Wednesday 22, 20.15, Mgarr Ground).
