Fiorentina claim VisitMalta Tournament

Fiorentina claimed the VisitMalta Tournament after defeating Hibernians 6-0 and Gzira United 2-0 at the National Stadium on Wednesday. A tournament which brought to an end the Italian Serie A side’s training camp in Malta.

The team, led by coach Stefano Pioli, is expected to return home on Thursday afternoon after this five-day training camp which was meant to boost the Viola’s preparation ahead of Sunday’s Coppa Italia fifth round clash with Torino and the second phase of their Serie A campaign.

In their first game, new signing Luis Muriel notched a hat-trick in a most comfortable 6-0 win for Fiorentina over Hibernians.

Marco Benassi gave Fiorentina the lead with a fine volley from outside the area on the 6th minute. Luis Muriel doubled the score thanks to a penalty after Radojevic floored Federico Chiesa on the 17th minute. Hardly a minute later, Luis Muriel made it 3-0 with a low shot from just outside the area. Cyril Thereau added another on the 23rd with a shot from close range. Luis Muriel sealed a fine performance with another goal on the 38th minute as he scored with an angled shot for the Viola’s fifth goal. However it was not over yet as Marco Benassi made it 6-0, tapping the ball home from close range following an assist from the right.

On the other hand, in the third match, Fiorentina registered a win over Gzira United.

An own goal by Sacha Borg put Fiorentina ahead after just three minutes. Jordan Veretout doubled the score with a powerful shot on the 17th minute. 

The best opportunity for the Maroons fell at the feet of new recruit Justin Mengolo who hit the foot of the upright.

Meanwhile in the first match, Gzira United defeated Hibernians 2-0.

Zach Scerri converted a penalty on the 17th minute to put the Maroons ahead after Nemanja Radojevic brought Sofian Domoraud down inside the area. Sacha Borg doubled the score with a fine header on the half hour.

After the tournament Fiorentina were presented with the VisitMalta Cup by Minister for Tourism Konrad Mizzi in the presence of Parliamentary Secretary for Youths, Sports and Voluntary Organisations Dr Clifton Grima, MFA General Secretary Dr Angelo Chetcuti and Helmut Amhof from SLFC.
