Mellieha earned three precious points in the battle against relegation as they defeated St. George’s 2-1 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium in a match from the BOV Second Division on Sunday. The Saints, on the other hand missed the chance to join Fgura on top.
An own goal put Mellieha ahead on the hour and although Mattia Mentosa equalised five minutes later, Jack Vella restored the lead on the 74th.
Luqa St. Andrew’s also registered an important win, defeating Rabat Ajax 2-1 in another match at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. Wayne Busuttil put Luqa ahead on the 17th and although Jean Scholey equalised on the 27th, Lydon Sciberras notched the winner two minutes from the end of the first half.
At the Centenary Stadium, Birzebbuga St. Peter’s defeated Siggiewi 4-0 to move joint-fourth together with Marsaxlokk. Keith Muscat opened the score on the 12th and three minutes later, Andrea Sant doubled the score. Ryan Sell increased the lead on the 55th with Felipe Pedrosa de Almeida adding another seven minutes from time.
In another match, Melita defeated Sta. Venera Lightnings 3-0 thanks to goals by Alan Borg Olivier on the 30th, Antoine Attard on the 77th and Liam Galea on the 92nd.
Fgura lead the way with 44 points, followed by Mgarr on 42, St. George’s 41, Marsaxlokk and Birzebbuga 40, Melita 32, Rabat 28, Kalkara 20, Zabbar and Mellieha 19, Sta. Venera and Luqa 16 and Siggiewi 12.
