Narrow win over Sliema puts Sirens on top

Sirens moved on top the BOV Premier League table as a goal by Flavio Cheveresan handed them a narrow win over Sliema Wanderers at the Centenary Stadium on Saturday.

A win which puts the St. Paul’s Bay on top on 13 points, two ahead of Hamrun and Floriana, who however have a game in hand, and three ahead of Gzira United and Hibernians. This was, in fact, the fourth win in six matches for the newly-promoted side.

For Sliema, it was yet another disappointing result as they now lie fourth from bottom on five points, having lost three out of the six matches played so far.

Sirens notched the winner on the 72nd minute. Seydou Sow blocked a goal-bound effort by Flavio Cheveresan with his hands. Referee Andrea Scirha sent off the Senegalese player and ordered a penalty with Flavio Cheveresan placing the ball at the back of the net from the penalty spot to hand Sirens the three points.
