Floriana edge past Gzira thanks to late Cheveresan goal

Flavio Cheveresan scored three minutes from time to hand Floriana a 2-1 over Gzira United at the National Stadium on Sunday.

Keeping in mind Thursday’s UEFA Europa League third qualifying round clash with Flora Tallinn, Floriana coach Vincenzo Potenza made a number of changes to the team which defeated Linfield last Thursday, naming Andrea Cassar in goal and including Moustapha Beye, Alex Cini, Flavio Cheveresan, Jan Busuttil and Daniel Agius in the starting line-up.

The Maroons, led by new coach Darren Abdilla, had Steve Borg, Gabriel Bohrer Mentz, Jackson Mendoza and Ricardo Correa making their debut along with Jefferson de Assis who is back with the club after a spell on loan.

Floriana managed to take the lead on the 13th minute thanks to a great Enzo Ruiz freekick which gave Justin Haber no chance with the ball ending in the top right corner.

Gzira equalised on the 22nd minute when Martin Davis won possession and following a good run on the right served Amadou Samb on the left and the latter slammed the ball home past Cassar.

However three minutes from time, the Greens regained the lead when Ryan Camenzuli concluded a good move on the left with a cross and Flavio Silva Cheveresan flicked the ball past Haber.
