Football in Gozo gets underway

The football season in Gozo kicked-off this weekend with the first two matches from the BOV Gozo Football League First Division and two matches from the BOV GFA Cup.

At the Gozo Stadium, Victoria Hotspurs found no difficulty in beating newly-promoted Sannat Lions 5-1 on Sunday.

Christian Mercieca put the Hotspurs ahead on the 13th minute and Shaun Attard doubled the score three minutes later. Henrique Maciel increased the lead on the 33rd but just before the end of the first half, Damon Hili reduced the gap for the Lions. However goals by Shaun Attard on the 50th and Rodrigo Ost dos Santos nine minutes later, sealed the issue for the Hotspurs.

On Saturday, Kercem Ajax defeated SK Victoria Wanderers 3-2. Samuel Saldanha put Kercem ahead on the 15th but Emerson Zammit equalised on the 35th. Saldanha restored the lead seven minutes in the second half and although Kersten Grima levelled matters on the 62nd, eight minutes later, Joshua Buttigieg made it 3-2 for Elton Vella’s side.

Meanwhile in the BOV GFA Cup, Gharb Rangers registered a 3-0 win over St. Lawrence Spurs at the Kercem Ajax Stadium on Saturday courtesy of Luke Attard on the 13th, Milos Stojanovic on the 21st and Carlos Cutajar on the half-hour.

On Sunday, a goal by Savio Galea five minutes from the end of the first half gave Xaghra United a narrow win over Oratory Youths.
