Hamrun take on Gzira in first of two direct clashes

Leaders Hamrun Spartans take on Gzira United in the first of two back-to-back direct clashes against the challengers for the title at the National Stadium in one of the four BOV Premier League matches in programme on Saturday.

Hamrun won their last five matches and are unbeaten in sixteen matches while Gzira won their last eight matches. Four points separate the two teams with Hibernians lying in second place, two points behind the Spartans.

In the first round, Hamrun and Gzira shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw.

At the Hibernians Stadium, a win for Hibernians over Zejtun Corinthians could possibly put them on top should Gzira defeat Hamrun. The Paolites are unbeaten in nine matches, winning their last five games. Zejtun, on the other hand, are untangled in the battle against relegation after losing their last two games. They are currently fifth from bottom as this season, four teams will be relegated and the team placing fifth from bottom will take part in the play-off.

Hibs defeated Zejtun 3-2 in the first round and last Wednesday, Hibs defeated Zejtun 3-0 in the FA Trophy round of 32.

In the first match at the Hibernians Stadium, Santa Lucia take on Mosta. The Blues are currently sixth on 30 points, together with Valletta, one ahead of Santa Lucia. Mosta earned four points from the last two matches in a win over Gudja and a draw with Sirens while Santa Lucia suffered a second defeat in four matches, losing to Valletta.

Mosta defeated Santa Lucia 1-0 in the first round.

At the National Stadium, Birkirkara will be aiming for a win as they take on Floriana in their bid to stay fourth. The Stripes defeated Valletta but were held in a draw by Sliema in their last two outings. Floriana, on the other hand, collected maximum points from their last two matches and are currently tenth. A win is a must as they hope to move further away from the relegation zone.

In the first round, Birkirkara defeated Floriana 5-2.
