Shaun Dimech scores twice as Valletta beat Senglea

Valletta registered a second win on the trot as they defeated bottom-placed Senglea Athletic 3-1 at the National Stadium on Sunday.

This was the third win in four matches for Antonio Jose Cardoso Mendes’ side which pushes Senglea Athletic even closer to relegation as they continue to chase their first win after twenty two matches, losing the last twelve matches.

Valletta took the lead on the 17th minute thanks to a powerful drive from outside the area following a short clearance by the Senglea rear-guard.

Six minutes later, the Citizens doubled the score thanks to Shaun Dimech who hit home from close range following a good move in which he exchanged the ball twice on the right flank with Enmy Pena Beltre.

Two minutes in the second half, Pena Beltre sent Fontanella through and off the latter’s cross, Shaun Dimech slammed the ball home from close range.

Senglea pulled one back five minutes from time when off a freekick from the right, Ronny Song tried to conclude but the ball ended at the feet of David Xuereb who hit home past goalkeeper Yenz Cini.
