Balzan stun Gzira with quick fire goals to turn defeat into victory

Balzan came back from a goal down as they scored two goals in a minute to beat Gzira United at the Centenary Stadium on Saturday.

A win which puts them back on track following two back-to-back defeats which led to the resignation of coach Mark Miller who has now been replaced by Paul Zammit although for Saturday’s game, leading the team were Luis Garcia Gutierrez and Alejandro Pantoja. They joined Valletta, Hamrun Spartans and Gzira in fourth place on nine points, one behind Floriana.

Following a goalless first half, the Maroons took the lead on the 59th minute when off a Steve Pisani corner from the right, Nevin Portelli headed home past goalkeeper Jake Galea.

However on the 67th minute, Balzan equalised thanks to an unfortunate own goal by Nevin Portelli who saw the ball bounce onto him and into the net following a corner by Milos Mijic from the right.

A minute later, Balzan notched the winner courtesy of substitute Aleksa Andrejic who tapped the ball home from close range after an Uros Ljubomirac effort was partially saved by Curmi.
