Second win in a row lifts Maroons to fourth place

Gzira United registered a second win in a row as they defeated Sirens 3-1 at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Saturday.

Darren Abdilla’s side moves fourth on level points with Floriana and one point ahead of Balzan and Hamrun Spartans although Floriana, Balzan and Hamrun have a game in hand.

Sirens, on the other hand, are now eighth as they suffer a third defeat in four matches.

Gzira took the lead on the 29th minute courtesy of Jefferson de Assis who received an assist on the right and beat goalkeeper Jonathan Debono with a shot from inside the area.

Sirens restored equilibrium ten minutes later as they were awarded a penalty after Fernando Brandan was brought down inside the area by goalkeeper Darijan Radelic Zarkov and from the penalty spot, Bogdan Gavrila converted.

The Maroons regained the lead four minutes in the second half thanks to Steve Pisani who concluded a good move on the left flank with a shot from outside the area which beat goalkeeper Jonathan Debono.

Gzira sealed the issue ten minutes from time thanks to Yuri de Jesus Messias who beat the Sirens goalkeeper with a fine shot from outside the area following a solo effort.
