Rivals Valletta, Hamrun Spartans cross swords as second round gets underway

Valletta will be aiming to keep the pace with leaders Hibernians with a win as they take on Hamrun Spartans in one of the two BOV Premier League matches in programme on Saturday.

At the Tony Bezzina Stadium, kick-off at 14:00, Santa Lucia face Floriana.

Santa Lucia share the second place from bottom with Gudja and Mosta on ten points. Although they lost just three matches from the eleven played so far, they won just one game with the other seven ending in draws. In their last three outings, they defeated Birkirkara 2-0 but then lost 0-3 to Hamrun, holding Balzan in a 3-3 draw. Floriana, on the other hand, are currently fifth on 17 points, just three points behind second-placed Valletta. The Greens won three out of the last six matches, losing to Sirens and earning two points in two draws including last weekend’s goalless draw with leaders Hibernians.

In the first round, Floriana and Santa Lucia shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw.

At the Natonal Stadium, kick-off at 16:00, Valletta take on Hamrun Spartans.

Two points separate the two teams with Valletta lying in second place on 20 points and Hamrun Spartans in fourth place on 18. After claiming maximum points from the previous three matches, including the protest over the match against Sliema, Valletta were held in a goalless draw by Birkirkara last week. On the other hand, after a most inconsistent phase, the Spartans won four out of the last five matches, losing only to Hibernians.

The Citizens will be without the influential Ivan Curjuric who serves a one-match ban.

In the first round, Valletta defeated Hamrun 2-1.

The other match between Sliema Wanderers and Balzan was postponed.
