Jefferson brace sinks Hibernians

Jefferson de Assis scored twice as Gzira United came from behind to beat Hibernians 2-1 at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Sunday.

Gzira therefore return to winning ways after dropping four points in draws with Gudja and Marsaxlokk in the last two outings. Hibs, on the other hand, suffer their second defeat.

The Maroons had two changes from their last game as Zachary Scerri and Ricardo Correa made way for Clive Gauci and Toni Kolega. On the other hand, Joseph Zerafa replaced Gabriel Izquier for Hibernians.

The Paolites took the lead on the 34th minute when off a Jurgen Degabriele freekick from the right, Ferdinando Apap hit home from close range.

Hibs could have made it 2-0 but Jake Grech was unlucky to hit the upright on the hour.

But three minutes later, Jackson Mendoza sent Jefferson de Assis through and the latter beat Ibrahim Kone on the run and placed the ball at the back of the net.

Nine minutes later, Jackson Mendoza stole the ball off Ali Diakite and pulled to the left before beating Kone with an angled shot to make it 2-1.
