Late Jonny strike hands Spartans ninth win

Hamrun Spartans regained a seven-point lead on top the BOV Premier League table as they defeated Balzan 1-0 at the Tony Bezzina Stadium.

This was the ninth win in ten matches for Branko Nisevic’s side. Balzan, on the other hand, continue to share the seventh place with Mosta on 14 points, one behind Floriana and one ahead of Marsaxlokk.

Following a goalless first half, the Spartans showed greater determination during the second half but only managed to score the all-important goal ten minutes from time when off a cross by Elvis Mashike from the right, Luke Montebello took advantage of a Balzan defender’s short clearance, serving Jonny Robert do Nascimento who slammed the ball home from close range.

Three minutes in added time, substitute Benjamin Hili received a second yellow card by referee Alex Johnson and was therefore sent off.
