BOV Challenge League: Sliema return to winning ways

Sliema Wanderers returned to winning ways in the BOV Challenge League as they defeated Zurrieq 3-0 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium on Sunday.

Mohamed Abdulahi Awad put Sliema ahead on the 13th, Lydon Micallef doubled the score on the 25th and Aidan Friggieri sealed the issue with a third goal eleven minutes from time.

Zejtun Corinthians moved second thanks to a 3-0 win over Melita at the Centenary Stadium. Andre Carlos Penha da Costa put Zejtun ahead on the 53rd, Caique da Silva Santos doubled the score on the 76th and six minutes from time, Andre Carlos Penha da Costa added another.

Tarxien Rainbows climbed to the fourth place as they registered a fifth win on the trot, defeating Vittoriosa Stars 2-0 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium courtesy of Darren Falzon on the 43rd and Emmanuel Mbong on the 69th.

St. Andrews rescued a point in a 2-2 draw with Marsaskala at the Centenary Stadium. William James England put the Saints ahead on the 18th minute but goals by Adrian Carabott on the 28th and Neil Falzon on the 39th turned the score in Marsaskala’s favour. However, three minutes from time, Jamie Sixsmith notched the equaliser.

In another match at the Centenary Stadium, Qrendi came back from two goals down to earn a point in a 3-3 draw with Lija Athletic. Goals by Erjon Beu on the 2nd and Lian Xuereb on the 4th handed Lija an early two-goal lead and although Henrique de Souza Maciel reduced the gap on the 38th, Lija went 3-1 ahead thanks to Duvan Mosquera Torres two minutes from the end of the first half. However goals by Nathan Cope on the 72nd and Christian Mercieca on the 84th handed Qrendi a point.

Sliema lead the way with 28 points, followed by Zejtun on 24, Naxxar 23, Tarxien 20, Fgura and Melita 17, Lija 15, Zurrieq 14, Swieqi, St. Andrews and Attard 12, Marsa and San Gwann 11, Mtarfa 8, Marsaskala, Vittoriosa and Mqabba 7 and Qrendi 6.
