Santa Lucia defeat Zebbug to move third from bottom

Santa Lucia claimed three important points in their battle against relegation as they defeated Zebbug Rangers 2-1 at the Centenary Stadium on Friday. A win which enabled Vincenzo Potenza’s side to move third from bottom on eight points, one ahead of Zebbug.

Santa Lucia, therefore, continued where they had left on Friday when they eliminated holders Floriana from the Izibet FA Trophy. On the other hand, for Zebbug, this was the sixth consecutive defeat, including the shock loss to Swieqi United in the FA Trophy.

Hardly thirty seconds had passed that Santa Lucia forged ahead when a through pass found Robert Bairam on the left and the Romanian beat Jamie Azzopardi with a fine shot from inside the area.

Zebbug levelled matters on the 61st minute when Roberto Enrique Sanchez inswinging corner from the right was not held by goalkeeper Matthew Calleja Cremona to end at the back of the net.

However, two minutes in added time, Santa Lucia regained the lead courtesy of substitute Jamie Carbone who received a cross from the right and controlled the ball before hitting past goalkeeper Jamie Azzopardi.

Two minutes later, the Rangers were reduced to ten men after having Wilker Rocha Santos sent off.
