Mosta came from behind to beat second-placed Gzira United 2-1 at the National Stadium on Saturday to join Balzan in fourth place and condemn the Maroons to a third successive defeat.
Gzira are still second but could lose their place to Birkirkara who have a game against Hibernians in hand or else end up sharing the runner-up spot with the Paolites should they emerge as winners on Sunday. Mosta, on the other hand, now lie two points behind Gzira.
The Maroons took the lead on the 9th minute when Marcelo Dias exchanged the ball with Jefferson de Assis on the right before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Ini Etim Akpan.
Mosta equalised on the 17th minute courtesy of Clayton Failla whose direct freekick proved too strong for goalkeeper Darijan Zarkov who could only deflect the ball into the net.
Eleven minutes from time, Mosta notched the winner when off a Christ Ememe corner from the left, Zachary Brincat headed the ball home past goalkeeper David Cassar.
