First series of School Olympics Under-15 Girls Tournament comes to a close

Over 60 girls from six schools gathered at the St Joseph Institute ground earlier this month to take part in a School Olympics Under-15 Girls Tournament, organised by the Women’s Football Department within the Inħobb il-Futbol Foundation, and the Maltese Olympic Committee.

The tournament saw the participation of teams from:

  • Maria Regina College, Mosta Secondary School, ex Lily of the Valley, Mosta
  • Maria Regina College, Mosta Secondary School, Zokrija
  • St Clare College, Pembroke Secondary School
  • St Catherine’s School
  • St Dorothy’s School
  • St Monica School, Gżira

The School Olympics Under-15 Girls Tournaments were introduced this season to further promote women’s football as well as the benefits of practising sports among secondary school students. This month’s event, won by the St Dorothy’s School team, was the third and final one for season 2022-23 with the previous tournaments held in December and May.

As in recent youth festivals, the participating girls were given information material about the upcoming UEFA Under-19 European Championship, being held in Malta from 3 to 16 July, 2023.

The growth of women’s football is a priority for the Malta FA and to this end, a public survey was launched recently as part of the ongoing process to develop a new strategy for women’s football in Malta.  Survey can be accessed through the following link https://bit.ly/41DxSp2

As the response for the School Olympics Under-15 Girls Tournaments has been very positive, the plan is to continue this initiative next scholastic year. Schools wishing to participate in these tournaments during the 2023-24 scholastic year may send an email to footballgirls@iff.mt
