IZIBET Amateur League: Mtarfa join Rabat on top as Mellieha hold Birzebbuga

Mtarfa registered their third win in Group A of the IZIBET Amateur League as they defeated Xghajra Tornados 2-1 at the Charles Abela Stadium on Saturday.

Luca Bugeja put Mtarfa ahead on the 9th and Kurt Borg doubled the score on the half-hour. Paul Simon Ellul converted a penalty on the 59th to reduce the gap.

Birzebbuga St. Peter’s dropped their first points as they were held in a 3-3 draw by Mellieha at the Sirens Stadium. Jonathan Cutajar put Mellieha ahead after just four minutes and although Samuel Saldanha equalised on the 22nd. Luca Mijic restored the lead five minutes from the end of the first half. Samuel Saldanha converted a penalty on the 67th and three minutes later, Cedric Zahra put the Saints ahead for the first time. However Aaron Hili converted a penalty ten minutes from time to restore equilibrium.

Pembroke Athleta defeated Mdina Knights 6-1 at the Charles Abela Stadium. Goals by Jordan Busuttil on the 33rd and Jordan Vella five minutes later handed Pembroke a two goal lead in the first half. Weverton Gomes extended the lead on the 54th and although Chris Saliba pulled one back on the 67th, Gomes scored another two goals on the 85th and 87th with Luke Taliana added another in added time.

Mqabba, on the other hand came from behind to beat Kalkara United 4-2 at the Sirens Stadium. Mauro Hammett put Kalkara ahead on the half-hour but a Dylan Zarb penalty levelled matters on the 59th. Andres Tenorio Viveros put Mqabba ahead on the 73rd and eight minutes from time, added another. Andriy Pisani reduced the gap two minutes in added time but Tenorio completed his hat-trick to make it 4-2 on the 94th.

Rabat and Mtarfa lead the way with 9 points, followed by Birzebbuga on 7, Mqabba, Pembroke and Qrendi on 6, Xghajra 4, Sta. Venera 3, Mdina 1, Mellieha, Kalkara and Siggiewi 0.
