First-half goals hand Hamrun Spartans precious win over Valletta

Hamrun Spartans scored twice in the first half hour to return to winning ways as they beat Valletta 2-1 at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Saturday.

The Spartans therefore made sure of staying on top the BOV Premier League as they wait for the game between Floriana and Gudja on Sunday. Valletta, on the other hand, suffer their second defeat in six matches – the first since the arrival of Enzo Potenza as coach.

Hamrun took the lead after just four minutes when Luke Montebello served Ryan Camenzuli on the left and off the latter’s cross, Uros Djuranovic beat goalkeeper Jake Galea.

The Spartans doubled the score on the 28th thanks to Jonny Robert do Nascimento who received an assist by Joseph Mbong and beat the Valletta goalkeeper with a shot from the edge of the area.

Valletta had an excellent opportunity to reduce the gap three minutes in teh second half when they were awarded a penalty after Joseph Mbong brought Victor Luiz Prestes Filho down inside the area but Brandon Paiber’s effort hit the crossbar.

However two minutes in added time, the Citizens pulled one back thanks to a Federico Falcone header off a cross from the right.
