Gzira United leapfrogged Mosta as they defeated them 3-0 at the Centenary Stadium on Sunday.
The Maroons therefore returned to winning ways, moving to just two points behind the teams in third place. Mosta now lie one point behind the Maroons.
Gzira took the lead two minutes in added time when Ewertton Silva served Thaylor Aldama on the right and the latter beat Akpan with an angled shot.
Two minutes in the second half, Gżira doubled the score when Gabriel Bohrer Mentz headed the ball home off a cross by Ewertton from the right.
The Maroons made it 3-0 on 76 minutes when off an assist by Thiaguinho, Thaylor Aldama beat Akpan with a powerful first-time effort.
