Darren Abdilla steps down as Gzira United coach

Gzira United have announced that coach Darren Abdilla has stepped down.

Darren Abdilla had joined Gzira United in Division 1 mid-way through season 2014/15, leading the club to third place and the Play-Off spot. The following season, he led the Maroons to promotion to the Premier League after an absence of thirty-four years and the following summer, he signed a new deal as part of the club’s technical staff although he was no longer the head coach. However he was re-appointed as coach a few months later. In summer 2019, he joined Valletta but was sacked in February when Valletta were ironically sharing the top spot in the table with Floriana. Abdilla re-joined Gzira in summer 2020.

Earlier in his career, he served as coach with St. George’s, Birzebbuga St. Peter’s and assistant coach with Floriana, Hibernians and Valletta, amongst other teams.

This summer the Maroons made it to the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa Conference League but they are currently joint-fourth from bottom in the BOV Premier League with 11 points from twelve matches.
