Valletta registered a first league win in over a month and a half as they defeated Gudja United 3-0 at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Saturday.
The Citizens therefore move two points ahead of Mosta and three ahead of Gzira United but the Maroons have a game in hand. Gudja, on the other hand, remain anchored at the bottom of the table with Sirens.
Valletta had a perfect start, taking the lead after just three mintues when a Victor Luiz cross from the left was deflected by Ricardo Mendes past goalkeeper Justin Spiteri for an own goal.
Federico Falcone hit the upright for Valletta a few minutes later but he managed to double the score two minutes from the end of the first half, heading the ball home off a cross by Shaun Dimech.
Seven minutes from time, the Citizens scored the third goal courtesy of substitute Diego Cardoso whose conclusion beat the Gudja goalkeeper.
