Sliema Wanderers move eleven points clear of Marsaxlokk, Birkirkara

Sliema Wanderers continued to strengthen their third place as they moved eleven points clear of fourth-placed Marsaxlokk and Birkirkara thanks to a 3-1 win over Santa Lucia at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Sunday

The Wanderers extend their positive run to twelve matches to leave Santa Lucia fourth from bottom, one point behind Balzan and Mosta and two ahead of Valletta.

Sliema forged ahead two minutes in the second half. Mohamed Abdulahi Awad released Geoffrey Acheampong on the left and the latter beat goalkeeper Celio with a fine shot from inside the area.

Santa Lucia levelled matters on the 59th courtesy of Tatsuro Nagamatsu whose shot from outside the area beat goalkeeper Timothy Aquilina after Aleksa Mrdja stole the ball off Henrique Murilo just outside the area.

Ten minutes from time, a powerful drive by Geoffrey Acheampong from midfield saw the goalkeeper deflect the ball onto the crossbar with the ball bouncing onto the field of play.

However four minutes later, Vito Plut restored the lead for the Wanderers beating Celio from close range following a freekick by Acheampong and a header from the right by Adukor.

On the 89th, Neil Frendo made it 3-1 heading the ball home off an Edmond Agius freekick.
