Gzira United claimed three precious points in the battle against relegation as they defeated Mosta 2-1 at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Sunday.
The Maroons joined Naxxar in seventh place on 28 points, two ahead of Balzan, three ahead of Santa Lucia and five ahead of Mosta who lie fourth from bottom, three points ahead of Valletta. For Mosta, this was the third defeat in four matches.
The Maroons took the lead seven minutes in the second half thanks to Jackson Mendoza whose low shot from outside the area beat goalkeeper Dylan Ciappara.
Mosta equalised five minutes later through Precious Linus Tenebe whose fine freekick beat goalkeeper Darijan Zarkov.
However twelve minutes from time, substitute Gabriel Bohrer Mentz notched the winner for Gzira as he headed the ball home off a corner from the right.
Kyle Spence could have increased the lead a few minutes later but was unlucky to hit the upright.
