After losing to Marsaxlokk in their previous league game and being eliminated from the IZIBET FA Trophy on penalties by Birkirkara, Hamrun Spartans returned to winning ways defeating the Stripes 2-0 at the National Stadium on Sunday.
A win which puts Luciano Zauri’s side two points behind leaders Floriana. Birkirkara, on the other hand, remain seventh on 30 points, four points behind fourth-placed Marsaxlokk, two behind Hibernians, who however have a game in hand, and one behind Naxxar.
The Spartans took the lead on the 22nd minute when off a cross by Juan Corbalan from the right, Ryan Camenzuli’s powerful drive from outside the area was deflected by Luke Montebello past goalkeeper Marcel Zapytowski.
Six minutes in the second half, Hamrun scored the second goal courtesy of a Luke Montebello penalty after Jonny was brought down inside the area by Zapytowski.
The Stripes were reduced to ten men on the 68th after Ali Diakite received a second yellow card.
