Marsaxlokk leave it till late to beat Santa Lucia

After losing to Floriana in the IZIBET FA Trophy and a draw with Gzira United, Marsaxlokk returned to winning ways as they scored three late goals to beat Santa Lucia 3-0 at the Centenary Stadium on Friday.

The Southseasiders remain fourth but move four points clear of Hibernians and six ahead of Naxxar Lions. Santa Lucia, on the other hand, remain fifth from bottom but lie just two points ahead of Mosta.

Alessandro Zinnari’s side received a major setback just before the end of the first half as they had Temitope Abraham Ojo sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

Marsaxlokk managed to break the deadlock sixteen minutes from time thanks to a Yuri Messias penalty after he was adjudged to have been fouled just inside the area by referee Matthew De Gabriele.

Three minutes later, the Southseasiders doubled the score courtesy of Fernando Gomes who received an assist on the edge of the area and after entering the area, beat goalkeeper Celio with a shot in the top left corner.

Marsaxlokk sealed the issue with a third goal one minute from time thanks to a Sunday Akinbule freekick which gave the Santa Lucia goalkeeper no chance.
