Malta Veterans to face Man Utd Veterans in friendly match

As part of the 65th anniversary of the Manchester United Supporters’ Club of Malta (MUSC) which was set up after the Munich tragedy in 1959, MUSC Malta will be bringing a team of former Man Utd players under the name of Manchester Reds to play a friendly against a team of Maltese veteran players. The game will take place at the Centenary Stadium on Thursday 13 June, starting at 7.30 pm.

Details about the MUSC Malta Cup by VisitMalta were given during a press conference at the MUSC premises.

Joseph Tedesco, President of MUSC, said that the line up of former United players will include legendary players like Jaap Stam and Ronny Johnsen, who were the central defensive duo in the unforgettable for United fans in 1998/99 when they also achieved the Treble. The squad will also include prominent players such as Lee Sharpe and David May.

Tedesco expressed the MUSC Malta’s satisfaction in being able to host a prestigious event with the participation of several Manchester United players, which will also include Sammy McIlroy, Martin Buchan, Lou Macari and Steve Coppell, who however will not take part in the game.

Speaking on behalf of the Malta Veterans, Carlo Mamo said the team is being coordinated by the Malta Football Players Association and the Veterans Malta Football Association.

Mamo said that the selection of the Malta Veterans will include any number of players who have worn the jersey of the national team, including Brian Said, David Camilleri, Jeffrey Chetcuti, Gareth Sciberras and Stephen Wellman, and others who played for several years in the selection category of Maltese football.

“We would like to thank MUSC Malta for the work they are doing to organize this event and for the opportunity they are giving us to play in this match,” said Carlo Mamo.

Tickets for the game can be purchased from the MUSC and from the Malta FA website tickets.mfa.com.mt. The game is the culmination of a number of events that the Supporters’ Club is organizing during the coming week, both in Malta and in Gozo.
