The Malta FA announced that national team coach Michele Marcolini has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect. The decision was taken following recent performances of the National Team. Mr Marcolini’s contract is due to expire on the 31st December 2024.
Assistant Coach Davide Mandelli has also been relieved of his duties.
The Association thanked both coaches for their professional contribution throughout their tenure with the national teams. Further announcements on the filling of the vacant positions will be made in due course following the next Executive Board meeting.
Michele Marcolini had been appointed as National Teams Head Coach in December 2022 with a contract until the end of 2024.
Under his leadership, Malta played sixteen matches, winning two friendly matches against Luxembourg away from home and Gibraltar at Ta’ Qali and the UEFA Nations League clash with Andorra on Tuesday. Malta held Slovenia and Belarus in two friendly matches last March.
Malta lost the eight competitive matches, played in 2023 against North Macedonia, Italy, England and Ukraine, both at home and away.
Earlier this summer, Malta lost two friendly matches in June against Czechia (7-1) and Greece (2-0) and in the opening match from the UEFA Nations League, Malta suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Moldova in Chisinau.
