San Siro says goodbye to hosting the 2027 Champions League final: UEFA has officially decided to exclude Milan as a venue.
The decision had been expected for some time, and now the official confirmation has arrived from Europe’s governing body, which plans to choose the final host by mid-2025.
The Reason Behind UEFA’s Decision
The Municipality of Milan could not guarantee that the San Siro stadium and its surroundings would remain unaffected by refurbishments during the period of the 2027 final. This uncertainty is tied to ongoing discussions between Inter and AC Milan regarding their stadium, with proposals related to the Meazza and potential new sites in Rozzano (Inter) and San Donato (AC Milan).

UEFA’s Official Statement
“Since the Municipality of Milan could not guarantee that the San Siro stadium and its surrounding areas would not be impacted by refurbishments during the 2027 UEFA Champions League final, the decision was made to exclude Milan from hosting the final. The bidding process has been re-opened to select a suitable venue, with a final decision expected in May/June 2025.”

Who Could Host the 2027 Final?
Initially, Milan seemed like the automatic choice for the 2027 Champions League final. UEFA had received only two bids for hosting the finals in 2026 and 2027, from Milan and Budapest. A few weeks ago, the European federation decided to assign the 2026 final to the capital of Hungary, choosing San Siro for 2027—but with conditions attached.
In a statement released on May 22, UEFA noted, “The decision has been suspended until September, pending FIGC’s submission of information regarding the refurbishment plans for San Siro stadium in Milan.” FIGC was awaiting updates from the Municipality of Milan concerning the future plans of Inter and AC Milan regarding the Meazza. Following the rejection of the proposal by WeBuild, there have been no further certainties about the stadium’s future. This led UEFA to take a step back, remove Milan from consideration, and re-open the bidding process to find a new candidate to host the final match of the Champions League in 2027.
