Floriana, Sliema fire blanks in Old Firm derby

Floriana stay one point ahead of rivals Sliema Wanderers as the two teams shared the spoils in a match from the 360Sports Malta Premier Opening Round at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Friday.

The Wanderers held the initiative during the first half and for most of the second half but failed to penetrate the Floriana rear-guard, having to settle for a draw which also extends the Greens’ unbeaten run to ten matches.

Early in the game, Myles Beerman tested Mafoumbi with a cross shot from the left and then Mohamed Awad had a shot from the edge of the area which ended just wide. Wescley threatened with a shot from outside the area which however ended wide on the half-hour and seven minutes from the end of the first half, Steve Pisani was unlucky to hit the upright with a well-taken freekick from the left.

Sixteen minutes in the second half, Wescley had a powerful drive from outside the area which just missed the target but a minute later, Thiaguinho Santos concluded a good move with a shot from outside the area which was deflected into a corner. Wescley had another fine effort from outside the area on 65 minutes turned into a corner by goalkeeper Christoffer Mafoumbi and five minutes later, Fernandinho exchanged the ball with Dunstan Vella on the left with the Brazilian’s effort from inside the area ending just wide.
