Hamrun Spartans scored twice in the dying minutes to come from behind and beat Gzira United 2-1 in a match from the 360Sports Malta Premier Opening Round at the Victor Tedesco Stadium on Thursday.
A win which enabled them to join the Maroons on 14 points but since they won this direct encounter, they would be the ones to make it to the Opening Round Top 6. Gzira, on the other hand, will have to play in the Bottom 6.
Following a goalless first half, seven minutes in the second half, Gzira took the lead when Christian Ebisindor Saint won the ball following a battle on the right flank and served Lecao who slotted the ball past Bonello from close range.
Gzira, therefore, seemed close to securing the Top 6 spot but Hamrun had other ideas as four minutes from time, Daniel Letherby, served on the right by Elionay, surprised goalkeeper Darijan Zarkov with a powerful shot from outside the area which was not held by the Gzira custodian, crossing the goal line.
Five minutes in added time, Emerson Marcelina notched the winner, heading the ball home off a freekick from the right by Raphael Lopes.
