Malta was drawn with Luxembourg as the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League knockout stage and play-off draws were held in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday.
The League C/D play-offs determined the two play-off ties taking place between the two best-ranked fourth-placed teams from League C and the two runners-up from League D. Two spots in League C are at stake.
In the other League C/D play-off, Gibraltar face Latvia.
The League C/D play-offs will take place on Thursday 26 and Tuesday 31 March 2026. Malta should play the first leg at home.
Malta and Luxembourg met only twice in competitive matches with Luxembourg defeating Malta 1-0 in February 1995 at Ta’ Qali and 1-0 at home in September 1995 in the EURO 96 qualifiers. There were five other friendly matches between the two teams with the first one in January 1970 ending in a 1-1 draw at The Stadium in Gzira, a 1-1 draw in Luxembourg in August 2003, a 2-0 win away from home for Malta in June 2012, a 1-0 win for Luxembourg at Ta’ Qali in March 2018 and a 1-0 win for Malta in Luxembourg in June 2023.
Luxembourg, who are currently ranked 89th, earned three points in Group C3 which included Northern Ireland, Bulgaria and Belarus thanks to away draws with Bulgaria and Belarus and a draw at home with Northern Ireland.
They had placed second in Group D2 in 2018, second in Group C1 in 2020, second in Group C1 in 2022.
