BOV Challenge Cup: Another three teams through to quarter-finals

Marsa, Tarxien Rainbows and Lija Athletic secured a place in the quarter-finals of the BOV Challenge Cup as three matches from the Round of 16 were played on Wednesday.

At the Centenary Stadium, Marsa came from behind to beat St. Andrews 2-1. William James England put St. Andrews ahead on 44 minutes but an own goal four minutes in the second half restored equilibrium and Dylan Agius converted a penalty ob 56 minutes to put Marsa in the next stage.

At the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Tarxien Rainbows defeated Sirens 4-3 after extra-time. Kurt Briffa put the Rainbows ahead on 2 minutes and Conor Borg doubled the score on 11 minutes. Hafiz Mohammed Akadom reduced the gap on 34 minutes but Kurt Briffa made it 3-1 four minutes later. However Sirens forced extra-time as Ryan Mercieca scored on 78 minutes and Thiago Nonato equalised two minutes in added time. Five minutes in the second half of extra-time, Dacosta Boadu notched the winner for Jacques Scerri’s side.

In the other clash between Lija Athletic and Gudja United at the Centenary Stadium, the penalty shoot-out had to determine the winner as at the end of the ninety minutes and extra-time, the score was still 0-0. Lija emerged as winners 5-4 as in the penalty shoot-out, Lija scored their penalties thanks to Kemmu Degran Jackson, Iury, Rundell Winchester, Omar Khatib and Mead Mifsud while Wesley Dias, Jamie Cutajar, Haruna Shodija Shola and Jeremy Delmar scored for Gudja with Dale Mifsud failing to score.
