Assikura Women’s League: Swieqi end Birkirkara’s reign to claim first ever title

Swieqi United have made history by clinching their first-ever Assikura Women’s League title.

The Owls sealed the championship with a commanding 3-0 victory over Birkirkara, opening an unassailable six-point lead with just one match remaining.

Under the guidance of coach Dorianne Theuma, Swieqi took control early in the game before securing the win with two second-half goals. Karima Abdulai, Rafanny, and Ema Micallef were on target as Swieqi delivered a statement performance against the outgoing champions.

This triumph marks the end of Birkirkara’s six-year reign as league winners. Swieqi’s late-season surge proved decisive, as they recorded three consecutive victories over Hibernians, Mġarr, and Birkirkara, netting seven goals without conceding. Their impressive run saw them overtake their rivals and clinch the title in style.

Having already lifted the Super Cup earlier this season, Swieqi will now set their sights on completing a historic domestic treble by adding the domestic cup to their collection which will start next month.

Meanwhile, in the other Top Four clash, Mġarr United climbed to second place with a 3-1 win over Hibernians.

In the Bottom Four, Mtarfa managed to cancel the zero from their points tally after holding Valletta to a 0-0 draw, making sure to end their campaign with at least a point.
