The Assikura Women’s Knock-Out has reached its penultimate stage with four teams left standing. With league champions Swieqi United and defending holders Birkirkara both eliminated, the door is wide open for new champions to emerge.
In the first semi-final, Hibernians – fresh from their dramatic penalty shootout win over Swieqi – take on San Ġwann.
The Paolites held their nerve in a goalless stalemate, with midfielder Kayleigh Chetcuti converting the decisive spot-kick to send them into the last four. Hibs are now eyeing a third consecutive Knock-Out final appearance.
San Ġwann, meanwhile, will be looking to cause a major upset.
The Bottom Four side dispatched Valletta with confidence in the quarter-finals and boast the league’s top scorer, Hailey Russell. The American striker has been in red-hot form, netting 27 goals this season and will be the key threat to Hibs’ backline.
In the other semi-final, Mġarr United face Lija Athletic.
Mġarr eliminated Birkirkara with a commanding 3-1 victory in the quarter-finals, thanks to a superb hat-trick from Colombian forward Valeria Villegas. The Greens, consistent Top Four contenders, are firm favourites heading into this clash.
Lija, however, have shown they can find the net, beating Mtarfa 4-2 in an entertaining quarter-final tie. They’ll need to be at their best to overcome a Mġarr side brimming with confidence and attacking firepower.
